Tesla Model 3 from the USA: what to check before buying

Battery, underbody damage, charging, and equipment: a consistent check of a specific Tesla before bidding.

Before you start

  • The range indicator does not replace battery diagnostics.
  • Charging compatibility is checked for a specific car and the required stations.
  • The estimate for an electric vehicle must take into account the inspection of the high-voltage system.
01

Identify the version by car documents and data

When searching for a Tesla Model 3 from the USA, it’s a good idea to start with a specific version and usage scenario. Compare the VIN, year, drivetrain, trim level, and available vehicle data. Don’t transfer specifications from another year of production to a lot just because the interior or bodywork looks similar in the photo. Save confirmation of important options.

Write down what you need every day: mileage between charges, parking space, winter routes and trips out of town. These requirements will help you evaluate the car better than the highest range figure in the ad. Check separately which features are available in its specific configuration and are transferred to the next owner.

02

Separate range and battery status

Tesla explains that the displayed range is based on the standard consumption, and the actual mileage depends on the operating conditions. Therefore, a photo of the screen with the range reserve does not prove either the full health of the battery or its malfunction. Diagnostic data and clear test conditions are required to resolve the issue.

Ask your service provider to determine the battery health test method available for your vehicle. The Model 3 manual describes the Battery Health Test, with the caveat that it is not available on all vehicles. Be sure to clarify what data was obtained, whether there are errors, and what was left unverified. A single percentage rating without an explanation of the method is of little help.

Check the nature of the impact and the condition of the bottom

For a damaged electric vehicle, it is important to see more than just the doors, wings and bumpers. Ask for available materials about the underbody, impact site, suspension and battery location. If the required angles are not available, mark this as unknown in the purchase decision. The absence of visible defects in the general photo does not close the inspection.

Have the high-voltage system inspected by a trained specialist. The estimate should include diagnostics, necessary work, and acceptance criteria. Do not approve repairs based solely on the “car starts” principle: you need a conclusion on the condition of the relevant systems and the vehicle’s suitability for further operation.

Plan your charging before delivery

Identify two real charging points: the main one near your home or work and a backup one. For each, write down the operator, connection type, and access conditions. Then, check the compatibility of your specific American Tesla, its equipment, and the required adapter with these stations. The words “charges everywhere” are not confirmation of such a check.

Include charging accessories and home installation in the budget as separate lines. Official Tesla materials describe various charging options; for use in Ukraine, you need to check the regional requirements and equipment of a specific car. Also check with the seller and service about the availability of service and charging options for this car after a change of ownership.

Gather purchasing decisions into one document

Before bidding, compile a brief dossier: car identification, history, documents, available diagnostics, damage list, and repair estimate. Include a charging plan and full budget. Next to each unconfirmed item, write down who will verify it and how. If the answer could significantly change the cost, get it before you buy.

Compare Tesla with an alternative that covers the same routes. Consider charging time, service availability in your city, and the initial work required. It makes sense to go into a negotiation when you are comfortable with a specific car, its condition, and costs, not just the idea of buying an electric car.

  • The version and required options are confirmed.
  • The battery evaluation method is clear.
  • Damage and untested areas are described.
  • Charging and full budget agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to determine the battery status from a photo of the power reserve?

The photo itself is not enough. You need to take into account the conditions of data display and the results of diagnostics performed in a way appropriate for this vehicle.

Will any adapter work for a Tesla from the USA?

Compatibility should be checked for the specific vehicle, adapter, and charging station. Do not purchase equipment based solely on a general model description.

What to add to the usual estimate for a damaged car?

Inspection of the battery and related systems of the electric vehicle, assessment of the required work, as well as the costs of compatible charging equipment and preparation of the charging site.
