August in the commercial vehicle market

On September 4, the SMMT reported 14,445 new light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in the UK in August, up 0.6% on the previous year. Pickup registrations fell 61.2% to 404.

For electric LCVs, the report cites 2,395 registrations and a share of 16.3%. This calculation also includes electric vehicles weighing 3.5–4.25 tons, so its denominator differs from the headline market figure of up to 3.5 tons.

One report — several different segments

Without specifying the weighting, it is easy to compare shares incorrectly. The rise of electric vans and the decline of pickups also illustrate different buyer needs. The SMMT attributes the weakness in pickups to previous changes to UK taxation, but this is a local market explanation.

What to consider for your own business

For a commercial vehicle, the load capacity after installation of the superstructure, daily mileage and idle time are important. If you choose an EV, check the charging at the base and the reserve for difficult routes. Sales statistics help to track the offer, but the best type of drive determines the real operating scenario, not the highest percentage of growth.
