Prototypes on the roads and production preparation

On September 10, BMW announced parallel testing of the iX5 Hydrogen prototypes and preparation for industrial production. The next phase of assembly of the third-generation fuel cells is starting in Munich, while the plant in Steyr is preparing equipment and personnel.

Engineers are testing the interaction between the fuel cell, electric motor, high-voltage battery, hydrogen tanks and control system. The goal is stability under load, efficiency and the familiar BMW handling.

How to read the declared characteristics

BMW is targeting a range of up to 750 km (470 miles) under the WLTP, refueling in less than five minutes, and acceleration to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. These are the prototype's benchmarks: the manufacturer explicitly states that there are no final certified consumption figures yet. The fuel cell generates electricity from hydrogen, and the wheels are driven by an electric motor.

Infrastructure is more important than a single number

For the buyer, the key issue is the availability of hydrogen stations on the daily route. A regular charging station will not replace a hydrogen refueling station. Before planning an import, it is worth separately confirming service, component supply and support for a specific version. The current message describes the development of the project, not a ready-made WonderCar offer.
