From the first Beetle to multi-model production
On August 31, Volkswagen celebrated 75 years of production in South Africa. The first locally produced Beetle rolled off the assembly line on August 31, 1951, at the plant in what was then Uitenhage, now Kariga.
According to Volkswagen, during this time the plant produced almost forty models and produced more than 4.8 million cars. More than three million of them were intended for the domestic market.
What the history of the local factory shows
Long-term production forms a network of suppliers, service skills and local automotive habits. The company's model list included Beetle, Kombi, Golf, Jetta, Polo and others. The anniversary total result should not be confused with the plant's capacity in one year.
